PASSERIFORMES: Maluridae
Amytornis ballarae
We spent a couple of hours looking for Kalkadoon Grasswrens on the eastern slopes of the Telstra tower hill, 30 kilometres along the Barkly Highway towards Camooweal from Mount Isa, without success and were ready to give it away. There were other sites we could try.
Fortunately, unbeknownst to us, Perth birder Scott McGregor had come up the mountain while we were busy searching and his vehicle was now blocking the only track off the mountain.
Scott must have had no trouble locating the Kalkadoon Grasswrens as soon as he arrived because he was just then returning to his vehicle to leave after successfully sighting and photographing them. He generously delayed his departure to lead us to where he had seen the birds and stayed until we'd had great views.
Thanks Scott. Your help was very much appreciated.
